Your R&D objectives written and SMART in just 10 minutes

With these example objectives you will be able to pick out which ones apply to you, make any necessary modifications and then just copy and paste them into your own.

R&D objectives are hard to write

Some R&D objectives tend to be around supporting others. You need to be clear exactly what this means. Other R&D objectives about keeping up with the latest research and "networking" can be very vague and woolly.

Cascading objectives in R&D can be more difficult that other departments so I've given an example of how to do this effectively.

Real Examples of badly written R&D objectives

I've gathered together examples from may R&D people just like you. I've put them into this document: my "quick start sheet".
All you need to do is make any necessary modifications then just copy and paste them into your own objectives.
You'll find the badly written objectives together with what they should really look like and my explanation of how to do it.

Every single example is from a real client: you will recognise many of them. This is THE fastest way to get your objectives written and make sure they are SMART.
Here are just a few examples of the badly written objectives. You'll probably recognise some of them:

  • Produce a development plan for each member of the team
  • Create a climate for innovation
  • Support project X
  • Provide high quality data to Team C
  • Work with project X to improve efficiency and quality
  • Form relationships with people outside ISIS
  • Act as manager when manager is absent.
  • Develop an understanding of the issues related to Visualising large data sets and develop a research program to address the issues
  • Use extensive networks to seek connections and to forge links
  • To attend relevant conferences and meetings;
  • Generate three candidate drugs each year

By getting these objectives right you'll find they are easier to achieve and you will be able to work out you plan effectively.

You'll discover what to do with all of these and much more.
